Career Choices for Makeup Artistry

How do I start a career as a makeup artist?

First and foremost perfect your craft, professional makeup artistry is an art - take make-up artist courses - learn and practice over and over again until it’s second nature.

I personally worked for make-up brands in Selfridges for years as a freelance make-up artist, having to apply make-up day in day out on a million different faces and being faced with lots of different issues and requests, gave me the best training I could have ever hoped for - plus I was learning from my colleagues all the time, i can honestly say I never feel out of my depth when painting a face and I have complete confidence in my skills knowing I can deliver for every client. Another thing working in Selfridges taught me was how to deliver the best customer service, the expectations in a luxury department store is so high that it really taught me a very valuable lesson. I never don’t reply to messages from clients, I put everyone that walks through my door at ease, and I do my best to make sure everyone leaves over the moon with their look and service. Working for make-up brands also has its benefits like discounts and allowances, which really helps when building your kit.

Open an Instagram account or social media account to post pictures of your work - build your portfolio as a make-up professional. If you are not social media savvy then learn! There is so much free information out there plus so many social media companies and managers offer master classes - they’re so helpful, I’ve learnt loads along the way!
