Becoming a make-up artist: entry qualifications and training

Kickstart Your Make-up Artist Career with Professional Training Courses

Well a good place to start to becoming a make-up artist would be with doing a course with a reputable training academy or expert in their field, so you can gain the fundamental knowledge and skills. Some courses don’t offer any qualifications and some do. You can qualify with a level 2, 3 or 4 diploma in hair and make-up artist qualifications however these courses can typically take a year to complete and you would be looking at spending around £3000-£4000.

Mastering the Fundamentals: Essential Knowledge for Freelance Make-up Artists

To work as freelance make-up artist it is important to have full knowledge of all the foundations of make-up, skin, application and colour, as you can literally be asked for anything when on a job or with a client. Honestly speaking in my career and time as a make-up artist I haven’t ever been asked for my certificates or qualifications in make-up. However I do feel it’s worth taking a course in make-up artistry that is accredited, an accredited make-up artist course means you gain a certificate at the end of the course and it does stand for something, you can also get insurance off the back of an accredited course.

The Importance of Make-up Artist Insurance

Being able to get insurance is important as I believe you will need this in any make-up job you do, you certainly don’t want to be in a position where someone has had an allergic reaction to a product, wants to take it legal and you have no insurance to cover you. Also if you ever wanted a career in teaching they would ask you for your accredited certificates in make-up before granting you the access to be a qualified teacher.

Practice Makes Perfect: The Key to Mastering Make-up Artistry

My biggest theory on training as a make-up artist is purely practice. I think anything practical just needs practice over and over again until you feel super confident in dealing with any request, any face and any issue. I personally found working on a make-up counter in a busy department store a very good place to practice, the custom was constant and everyone had a different request and issue. So when it came to dealing with private clients I found it a walk in the park, no request was too much or stressed me out. The key to understanding exactly what someone wants is to ask as many questions as possible about what they want to achieve and actually listening to them and taking in exactly what they say, the goal is always a happy client.
